About This Site
Best Fitness List is a one-person review site about home fitness equipment that fits real life in a small house. Everything covered here is gear that works in a spare bedroom, stores in a closet or under a bed, and holds up to being used several times a week for years. The focus is strength, mobility, balance and recovery equipment for people who are past fifty and want to stay strong enough to keep doing the things they already love. Every review is written after living with the thing, and it says where the thing is annoying as well as where it is good.

Exercise Equipment Safety
Home exercise equipment is safe when it is set up properly and genuinely risky when it is not. An exercise mat on a hardwood or tile floor can slide out from under you, especially a new one that still has a slick finish. Check that a mat grips before you stand on it, and put it against a wall or on a rug pad if it does not. Keep the floor around your workout space clear. Most home exercise injuries are trips and falls, not lifting injuries.
Dumbbells belong on the floor when you are not holding them, never on a chair, a bed or a shelf where they can roll off onto a foot. Set them down, do not drop them. Resistance bands and tubes need the most respect of anything in this category: a band that snaps, or an anchor or door attachment that lets go, sends the handle back toward your face at speed. Inspect bands for nicks, cracks, chalky patches and thin spots before every session, replace any band that shows them, and never stretch a band while your face is in its path.
Foam rollers and massage tools go on muscle, not on joints, not on the spine itself and not on the front of the neck. A balance pad or any unstable surface should be used within arm's reach of a wall, a counter or a sturdy chair until you are certain of your footing, and never on a slippery floor.
Start lighter than you think you need to and add load slowly. If something hurts in a sharp or sudden way, stop. Nothing on this site is medical advice, and no product covered here treats, diagnoses or cures anything. If you have a heart condition, a recent injury or surgery, a balance problem, or you have been away from exercise for a long stretch, talk to your doctor about what is appropriate for you before you start.
